We need to go &#8220;command line&#8221; to backup Active Directory.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>1.<\/strong>&nbsp;Open up your command prompt by clicking&nbsp;<strong>Start<\/strong>&nbsp;and type &#8220;<strong>cmd<\/strong>&#8221; and hit enter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>2.<\/strong>&nbsp;In your command prompt type &#8220;<strong>wbadmin start systemstatebackup -backuptarget:e:<\/strong>&#8221; and press enter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Note:<\/strong>&nbsp;You can use a different backup target of your choosing<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>3.<\/strong>&nbsp;Type &#8220;<strong>y<\/strong>&#8221; and press enter to start the backup process.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pluralsight.com\/content\/dam\/pluralsight\/blog\/2009\/05\/backup-and-restore-active-directory-on-windows-server-2008\/wp\/img\/backup-and-restore-ad-in-server-2008-graphic-5.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.pluralsight.com\/content\/dam\/pluralsight\/resources\/blog\/2009\/05\/backup-and-restore-active-directory-on-windows-server-2008\/wp\/img\/backup-and-restore-ad-in-server-2008-graphic-5.jpg\" alt=\"How to Backup and Restore Active Directory on Server 2008 - 5\" class=\"wp-image-5428\" title=\"How to Backup and Restore Active Directory on Server 2008 - 5\"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>When the backup is finished running you should get a message that the backup completed successfully. If it did not complete properly you will need to troubleshoot.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pluralsight.com\/content\/dam\/pluralsight\/blog\/2009\/05\/backup-and-restore-active-directory-on-windows-server-2008\/wp\/img\/backup-and-restore-ad-in-server-2008-graphic-6.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.pluralsight.com\/content\/dam\/pluralsight\/resources\/blog\/2009\/05\/backup-and-restore-active-directory-on-windows-server-2008\/wp\/img\/backup-and-restore-ad-in-server-2008-graphic-6.jpg\" alt=\"How to Backup and Restore Active Directory on Server 2008 - 6\" class=\"wp-image-5429\" title=\"How to Backup and Restore Active Directory on Server 2008 - 6\"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Now you have a system state backup of your 2008 Server!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Authoritative Restore of Active Directory<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>So now what if you accidentally delete an OU, group, or a user account and it&#8217;s already replicated to your other servers? We will need to perform an authoritative restore of the Active Directory object you accidentally deleted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>1.<\/strong>&nbsp;To do this you will need to boot into DSRM (Directory Services Restore Mode) by restarting your server and pressing&nbsp;<strong>F8<\/strong>&nbsp;during the restart.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>2.<\/strong>Choose&nbsp;<strong>Directory Services Restore Mode<\/strong>&nbsp;from the Advanced Boot menu.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pluralsight.com\/content\/dam\/pluralsight\/blog\/2009\/05\/backup-and-restore-active-directory-on-windows-server-2008\/wp\/img\/backup-and-restore-ad-in-server-2008-graphic-7.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.pluralsight.com\/content\/dam\/pluralsight\/resources\/blog\/2009\/05\/backup-and-restore-active-directory-on-windows-server-2008\/wp\/img\/backup-and-restore-ad-in-server-2008-graphic-7.jpg\" alt=\"How to Backup and Restore Active Directory on Server 2008 - 7\" class=\"wp-image-5430\" title=\"How to Backup and Restore Active Directory on Server 2008 - 7\"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>3.<\/strong>&nbsp;Login to your server with your DSRM password you created during Active Directory installation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>4.<\/strong>&nbsp;Once you&#8217;re logged into your server and in DSRM safe mode, open a command prompt by clicking&nbsp;<strong>Start<\/strong>, type &#8220;<strong>cmd<\/strong>&#8220;, and press enter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>5.<\/strong>&nbsp;To make sure you restore the correct backup it&#8217;s a good idea to use the &#8220;<strong>wbadmin get versions<\/strong>&#8221; command and write down the version you need to use.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pluralsight.com\/content\/dam\/pluralsight\/blog\/2009\/05\/backup-and-restore-active-directory-on-windows-server-2008\/wp\/img\/backup-and-restore-ad-in-server-2008-graphic-8.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.pluralsight.com\/content\/dam\/pluralsight\/resources\/blog\/2009\/05\/backup-and-restore-active-directory-on-windows-server-2008\/wp\/img\/backup-and-restore-ad-in-server-2008-graphic-8.jpg\" alt=\"How to Backup and Restore Active Directory on Server 2008 - 8\" class=\"wp-image-5431\" title=\"How to Backup and Restore Active Directory on Server 2008 - 8\"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>6.<\/strong>&nbsp;Now we need to perform a non-authoritative restore of Active Directory by typing &#8220;<strong>wbadmin start systemstaterecovery -version:04\/14\/2009-02:39<\/strong>&#8220;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Note:<\/strong>&nbsp;The version of backup will vary depending on your situation.
